EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Local Journalist
CHMA is extremely excited to be offering the position of Local Journalist. This paid, full-time, one-year position is made possible through funding provided by the Community Radio Fund of Canada and the Government of Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative.
This position is a full-time 1 year contract. Salary is $40-47,000 for a 30 hour work week with 3 weeks paid vacation and Health Benefits. Renewal is subject to funding. Preferred start date is March 16th (negotiable).
CHMA-FM is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Mount Allison University serving listeners throughout Sackville, New Brunswick and the Greater Tantramar Region. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and under-represented voices. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 100 volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and a staff of volunteers and a part-time programming director under the supervision of a full-time Station Manager.
The applicant will work from the offices of CHMA to generate daily news stories on issues and activities that arise from local institutions and governments within the North Cumberland and Westmorland counties, including issues relating to local governments and institutions, Indigenous groups, climate change, poverty and economic development as well as cultural activities such as art galleries, theatre groups, music festivals and other special interests groups.
The applicant will also be expected to mentor, engage and inspire our current news staff. Heading the news department, the applicant would also host workshops and training sessions for the community at large during the academic year.
The applicant will also be required to collaborate with and share daily news stories with CFTA 107.9 FM (Amherst, NS).
The ideal candidate will be motivated, creative and organized — an enterprising journalist who needs little direction in researching, writing, editing and presenting local news stories. The successful candidate will have experience in broadcast journalism.
