Sackville town council meets Tuesday at 6:30pm for its monthly special meeting, meant for discussion and information sharing, but not voting on motions.

Two streets-related items are on the agenda for discussion: the proposed amendment to the street traffic by-law which would see the ban on skateboards lifted, and the speed limit on Pond Shore Road.

Pond Shore Road has long been the subject of speeding complaints from local residents, and was brought up at council last fall. After the town of Sackville enquired with the province about the possibility of changing the speed limit on the road, the provincial department of transportation and infrastructure wrote back to say that the decision would actually rest with the municipality. This was news to both council and town engineer Dwayne Acton, and they agreed to look further into what was involved.

Acton will likely have more information to share on Tuesday evening.

The town’s street traffic by-law is also up for discussion Tuesday related to a proposed amendment lifting the ban on skateboards on town streets.

The bylaw change made first reading in February, and proposed to remove the section of Sackville’s streets bylaw that bans skateboards outright from streets and sidewalks. It also added skateboards alongside roller blades and bicycles, which are both allowed on Sackville streets, but not on sidewalks.

The change was due to go to second and third reading in March, but a report from town clerk Donna Beal explained that “after receiving information from the town’s insurance provider, further review is needed, and it is likely that subsequent discussions will be required.”

It’s expected those discussions will happen Tuesday night.
