13-year-old Port Elgin student killed in motor vehicle crash

A collision involving an undisclosed type of motor vehicle and a bicycle has killed a 13-year-old boy who was a student at Port Elgin Regional School.

Shediac RCMP say they responded to a report of a collision in Cap-Pelé on Monday evening. The boy had sustained serious injuries and was brought to hospital in Moncton, and died of his injuries on Tuesday.

The driver of the vehicle and a passenger were not injured.

RCMP say the investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.

Principal Christoph Becker of Port Elgin Regional School issued a talk mail message to the school community to let them know about the death, and what resources are available at the school.

He said after getting the news from the RCMP, the school informed children in grades three and up “in a safe, supportive environment.”

The school has implemented a plan to help students deal with the tragedy. Staff have been given guidelines to follow, and counsellors will be available to students at the school, he said.

A list of resources is available on the school’s Facebook page.
