Advisory committee asks council to tackle its biggest emitter, the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre

On today’s show, we talk with Doug Bliss, chair of the Tantramar Climate Change Advisory Committee, one of the few formal citizen advisory committees appointed by Tantramar council. The CCAC is calling on Tantramar council to set a goal for the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre of near net zero emissions by 2032.

The municipality spent roughly $200,000 on electricity for the civic centre in 2023, and Bliss is hoping councillors will agree to tackle reducing that annual cost–and the related emissions–through a plan including energy efficiency measures, and ultimately renewable power generation.

The committee is asking council to put some of its remaining 2025 climate change budget towards pulling together the specifics of such a plan.
