The Town of Amherst’s free downtown Wi-Fi is getting an upgrade.

Four wireless access points have been providing free Wi-Fi in downtown Amherst for the past eight years.

The technology is now out of date and no longer supported by the vendor that makes the equipment, and so is being replaced at a cost of $6,500.

The upgraded Wi-Fi will have increased download speeds.

The name of the network will change to Amherst Free WiFi from DOWNTOWN-WIFI.

To carry out the upgrade, the service will be unavailable for a 12- to 24-hour period beginning on Wednesday evening, Sept. 30, 2020.
