CHMA News is growing. Thanks to the support of the station’s monthly local journalism sustainers, the Rotary Club of Sackville, and the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative, 2022 will bring a new voice to Tantramar Report.
Journalist David Gordon Koch is joining the CHMA news team on a part time basis starting in January.
You may recognize Koch’s name from his by-line in the Times and Transcript, where he’s been working as a full-time reporter. Koch began his journalism trajectory about 15 years ago as a volunteer reporter at the University of Victoria, and then at CKUT campus and community radio in Montreal. At the Times and Transcript, Koch has focussed a lot on issues related to homelessness and housing. He’s also interested in climate change, Indigenous issues, and labour.
“I’m really interested in how people’s stories interact with the big structures of the state and the markets,” says Koch. “And I think there’s kind of a basic dignity that people have, and I try to communicate their struggles, that spirit of people’s basic dignity, in my work.”
Koch will be working part-time for CHMA starting in January, in addition to a new part-time position with the NB Media Coop. “I’m looking forward to getting back into the world of independent media,” says Koch.
CHMA station director James Anderson says he’s thankful to the funders who are making the new position possible, including the Rotary Club, the LJI program, and CHMA’s monthly local journalism sustainers.
