(Atl-FedELXN-Campus-Voting)

Students at more than 100 universities and colleges across Canada can now cast their ballots for the upcoming federal election on campus. 

Elections Canada says campus polling stations opened yesterday, and will operate from 9 a-m to 9 p-m today through Wednesday.

It says on-campus voting is open to all Canadians, not just students.

Early votes are taking place at 10 post-secondary institutions across Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P-E-I.

(Moncton-Exxon-Closure)

ExxonMobil is closing its Moncton, New Brunswick, call centre, resulting in 250 people losing their jobs by the end of next year.

Employees at the multinational oil company’s office on Ocean Limited Way in Moncton were informed Wednesday.

According to the provincial government, the jobs at the business support centre will be cut between June this year and December 2026. 

A spokesperson for the U.S. company confirmed the closure in a brief statement.

(NS-Carbon-Monoxide-Incident)

The Halifax Professional Fire Fighters Association says they responded to a carbon monoxide incident that sent five people to the hospital. 

The fire fighters’ union says its members found dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide throughout an 18-unit apartment building in Dartmouth around 1 a-m yesterday.

Crews evacuated residents and five people were taken to hospital with symptoms of mild to moderate carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fire fighters located the source of the leak in the exhaust system of the building’s boiler and the situation was considered under control by around 3 a-m and residents were able to return to their apartments.

(Halifax-Bike-Thefts)

Halifax police are warning bike owners to be extra vigilant as they see a rise in bicycle thefts. 

The number of bikes reported stolen in Halifax has doubled from 2023 to 2024, according to police data obtained by C-B-C. 

Mike Sime’s bike was stolen last November, and he says he wasn’t surprised by the increase in reported thefts.

(PEI-Flu-Outbreak)

Health P-E-I says a flu outbreak has been declared at a long-term care home in Charlottetown. 

The department says the outbreak of influenza is currently restricted to one of 10 households in the 120-bed facility.

Residents in the Lupin Valley household will be limited to one visitor at a time, and that visitor must wear a mask and follow infection control measures.

(NL-New-Hospital)

A new mental health and addictions hospital facility is now open in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The sprawling new building next to the Health Sciences centre replaces the 170-year-old Waterford Hospital.

The new 102-bed facility includes individual inpatient rooms and shared spaces for recreation, art therapy, horticulture.

Mental health inpatients at the Waterford Hospital were set to move to the new facility on Sunday.
