“Breathing Room” installation on display at 8 Squire Street

An inflatable plastic installation hung from the ceiling of a house.
Marcia Huyer’s work is on display until Sunday, July 4th.

Sculptor Marcia Huyer rode the ferry from Cornerbrook, Newfoundland and made her way to New Brunswick to fulfil a long-time artistic desire: to set up her work inside of a home.

Her work Breathing Room features inflatable sculptures inside of a home currently under renovation on 8 Squire Street. The installation is put on by Umbrella Projects, a collaboration between the Owens Art Gallery and Struts & Faucet.

Huyer says that her work takes on a new meaning when presented in this unconventional space. Before this project, she’s only been able to feature her sculptures in gallery spaces.

“I’ve always had an interest in architecture, and the process of building,” says Huyer. “How the house is living and working and breathing…It has all these internal functions that we’re not really aware of…That was my interest, blending architecture and the body, the organic and industrial, blurring those kind of lines.”

She set up her work as parts of the house were being renovated, so the setting changed from moment-to-moment. The floor is still uneven, so the organizers advise caution when visiting the space.

Breathing Room is on display today (July 2) from 6PM-9PM, tomorrow (July 3) from 12PM-5PM, and Sunday (July 4) from 12PM-4PM. Volunteers will be on-site to ensure that all visitors follow COVID-19 protocols and that it doesn’t get too crowded. Only four people are allowed in the exhibit at one time.
