Just a few hours after Sackville town council briefly discussed repairs to the town fire department’s aerial truck, the vehicle in question was set up on Bridge Street battling a downtown fire.

The building between Meldrum Law and the Royal Bank—current home to Nabi Sushi and three residential apartments—was billowing smoke at around 9pm on Tuesday night.

Residents of the three apartments all made it out safely. They are believed to all be Mount Allison students.

The university says it has been in contact with the students affected and will ensure they have housing and additional supports as needed.

Residents of Sackville offered help to those displaced on social media.

The Sackville Fire Department was out in full force, as were departments from surrounding communities such as Amherst and Dorchester.

Firefighters appeared to have cut a hole in the rear second story roof of the building, and also gained access from a door on Bridge Street.

A team of firefighters was sent into the Royal Bank and came out without incident.

At about 9:30pm, smoke could be seen pouring out of the third story windows of the building, but by 10:30 most of the smoke seemed to have cleared.

By 11pm, the town of Sackville posted to social media that the fire was under control.

The owner of the building is Duane Pauley, former owner of A Touch of Class hair and tanning, which once occupied the now vacant space beside Nabi Sushi.

CHMA will bring you more information about the fire as we learn it.
