Sackville town council will meet online tonight for its monthly discussion group meeting of council. Discussion group, or special meetings are for information and discussion only, and often give a preview of motions to be voted on the following week, at the regular monthly council meeting.
Council will hear three presentations: from the RCMP, from Shelley Chase of Levee on the Lake, and from Garth Zwicker making a case of a permanent farmer’s market location.
Deputy Mayor Ron Aiken says that Zwicker has brought the idea forward before.
“It’s a permanent farmers’ market he’s talking about,” says Aiken. “So we can have some way to get a permanent structure in town to accommodate the farmers’ market. And one of the problems that perennially comes up with that is the farmers market operates for three or four hours a week. So what do you do with the structure the other 164 hours of the week?”
Community development grants are also on the agenda, which Aiken says will likely be an outline of what’s proposed in terms of funding.
“I suspect that they’re going to give us the list of who’s getting what,” says Aiken. “We haven’t seen that up to now.”
Council will need to approve the grants, but that won’t happen this week as no motions are tabled at discussion meetings. Aiken says council rarely interferes with the grants recommendations made by staff. “Usually we’ll leave that in the hands of staff to do because it sort of gets away from that political involvement.”
Also on the agenda are the lease with Mount Allison University for the Waterfowl Park, amendments to the town’s street traffic bylaw, and the purchasing of flower pots.
Tonight’s meeting will be streamed live via Youtube and also be open to members of the public via Microsoft Teams. There will be a fifteen-minute question period during the meeting where members of the public are invited to ask questions, “just on topics that were included in the agenda,” says Aiken.
The meeting starts at 6:30pm and links can be found on the town website here.
