Family home destroyed and woman dead after fire in British Settlement

A 75 year old woman is dead and two of her family members displaced after a tragic fire last weekend in British Settlement.

Sackville fire chief Craig Bowser says the department responded to a call in the wee hours of Friday night, and asked for help with shuttling water to the scene from Point de Bute and Dorchester fire departments.  The Sackville RCMP also responded to the fatal fire, along with Ambulance NB.

Sergeant Eric Hanson says two residents of the home safely exited, but one was unable to escape.

Community members and friends have responded with fundraising efforts to help support the family who lost a loved one and their home.

Ethan Sears is raising funds online with a Go Fund Me campaign with the title “DJ’s Family Rebuild”.

And Mount Allison University’s administrative services and people and culture departments are also providing support.  Provost Richard Isnor sent a message to university faculty on Thursday alerting them to the tragedy, and outlining ways to make donations through the university in support of affected staff member Joyce Johnson.

Isnor also said Mount Allison would be making a contribution to the support fund.

As with all house fires, the New Brunswick Fire Marshall is investigating the cause. Hanson says no criminality is suspected.
