(OBIT-BOOKS-Antonine-Maillet)

Antonine Maillet — novelist, playwright and Acadian — has died at the age of 95.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised Maillet for her literary achievements and for her unwavering advocacy on behalf of Acadians.

He called her a beacon of Acadian pride and resilience whose voice will continue to inspire generations to celebrate the stories that make Canada’s cultural tapestry so rich and diverse.

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt described Maillet as a literary trailblazer, and a fierce champion of the French language.

(NB-Stolen-Horse)

Police are investigating after a horse was stolen from a property in eastern New Brunswick.

The R-C-M-P say they believe it happened on January 18th in Hardwicke, noting two saddles were also stolen.

They’ve also released photos of the horse, named “Jazzy,” along with the saddles that are brown with stitching details.

The Mounties are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area on January 18th or has any information about the stolen horse to please contact them. (The Canadian Press)


(NB-Saint-John-Hospice)

A hospice operating in Saint John is getting an increase in operational funding from the New Brunswick government.

The government says it will provide 5.7-million-dollars over five years to Hospice Greater Saint John, which operates Bobby’s Hospice.

The funding will go to support clinical care costs and represents an increase of more than 40 per cent from the previous five-year service agreement.

Bobby’s Hospice was the first 10-bed residential hospice for in-patient care in Atlantic Canada when it opened in 2010. (The Canadian Press)

(NL-Dialysis-Machines)

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has announced funding for new dialysis machines at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook.

Some 103-thousand-dollars in funding will go toward five new dialysis machines.

Health and Community Services Minister John Hogan says the new machines “will ensure people who need dialysis will get the necessary patient care and enable better health outcomes for the patient.”

Dialysis machines offer renal replacement therapy to those with advanced kidney failure. (The Canadian Press)

(NL-Easter-Seals-Board)

A paralympian from southern Newfoundland and Labrador has joined the province’s Easter Seals chapter.

Holyrood native Liam Hickey has been named board director of Easter Seals Newfoundland and Labrador and will also serve on the organization’s Programs Advisory Committee.

The former Easter Seals ambassador got his start playing in the organization’s wheelchair basketball and sledge hockey programs.

Hickey will be responsible for ensuring programs stay inclusive and effective for participants, and says he is honoured to work with an organization that has had a major impact on his life and career. (VOCM)
