(NB-Housing-Initiative)

The New Brunswick Government says it will move ahead with planned projects that aim to help beat back the housing crisis and bring more affordable housing.

The federal government says it has adopted a proposal from New Brunswick to waive the provincial H-S-T on multi-unit builds, keeping New Brunswick building crews on level with the rest of the Atlantic.

Premier Susan Holt says the government wants to spark more development of affordable multi-unit builds.

Currently work is underway on 149 public housing units at 17 sites across the province, while planning is underway for another 40 units in the 2025-26 fiscal year. (The Canadian Press)

(NS-Auditor-General)

The Nova Scotia’s government has given itself sweeping powers to fire the auditor general without cause — a move that is being described by a democracy watchdog as a threat to her office’s independence.

Co-founder Duff Conacher of Democracy Watch says an omnibus bill that allows the dismissal of the auditor general without cause creates a political threat to her job.

The tool would require two-thirds favour from all members of the legislature to move forward with firing the auditor general.

Premier Tim Houston’s government is also trying to amend the Auditor General Act — hoping to establish a two-week minimum timeline for the auditor to submit a report before to the government is required to release it to the public. (The Canadian Press)
