Fifteen students impacted by fire

A five-bedroom apartment above the former Meldrum Law office on Bridge Street was also evacuated on Tuesday night.

University spokesperson Laura Dillman says that 15 Mount Allison students were impacted by Tuesday night’s fire on Bridge Street, and had received assistance from the university.

In addition to the nine residents of the Nabi Sushi building whose apartments were destroyed, another five to six people lived next door in the Meldrum Law building.

The owner of that building is Sean Doucet.

Doucet says although the five-bedroom apartment he rents above the former Meldrum Law office still smells like smoke, the New Brunswick fire marshal told him it’s all clear for people to move back in.

Belfor, a fire restoration company, came in to Doucet’s building and put air scrubbers in the apartment to help clear the space. But, they told Doucet the smell of smoke throughout downtown could last a week or two.

Doucet says his tenants have not moved back in, though they have access to the apartment. He also said that he will not be charging rent until they feel ready to move back in.

The downstairs tenant, Meraki Body Lounge, is open again for business, he says.

Doucet says he is grateful for the work of the Sackville Fire Department which he credits with saving his building.

A communications officer for New Brunswick public safety says the fire marshal is still investigating but has completed the on-scene portion of the investigation.
