New Brunswick premier Susan Holt was in Ottawa Wednesday to meet with the prime minister and her provincial counterparts to discuss the country’s strategy in response to possible 25% tariffs threatened by incoming US president Donald Trump.

Shortly after the meeting, Holt spoke to reporters and told them the premiers are united on the goal of eliminating tariffs, despite the fact that Alberta premier Danielle Smith did not sign a joint news release after the meeting. “We have a plan for counter tariffs should we need to use it,” said Holt. “The number one goal is to prevent the tariffs, but we are ready to act to lift them as quickly as possible with a strategy of retaliatory tariffs on imports.”

Holt also says that now is the time to “actively support our own economies” by buying New Brunswick and Canadian made products.
