In a year end interview with CHMA, Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton says that after her first month back in the legislature, her post-election hopeful feelings have not been dashed.
Mitton says she sees evidence of collaboration in the legislature between the new government of Premier Susan Holt and opposition parties. When it came to 3% rent cap legislation recently passed, Mitton says the Liberal government was willing to discuss amendments, and adopted some of those put forward by the Green MLA.
And when it comes to infrastructure, Mitton says she has met with Chuck Chiasson, the new minister of transportation and infrastructure, to talk about the Wheaton Covered Bridge, route 955, and the Chignecto Isthmus. “I’m going to be following up with him in January to say, okay, now you’ve had a chance to be briefed on this file, where do we go from here?”
In terms of health care, Mitton says “it’s hard to frame things as successes when we’re still in such a desperate situation… but I do think there has been some progress with getting the Tantramar primary care clinic up and running, and there are more health care professionals coming on board.” Mitton says she is continuing to press for increased ER access and shorter ambulance times, as well as on preventative health care, such as better access to vaccines in the region.
