No new cases in the Maritimes

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI all reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday.

There are still five active cases in New Brunswick, two in the South East zone and three in the central zone.

There are three active cases of COVID-19 in PEI, and just one remaining in Nova Scotia.

Worldwide, the number of reported coronavirus cases passed 15 million yesterday.

More than 9 million people have recovered, and over 600,000 have died with the disease.

The US is still leading the world in newly reported daily cases, with 62 thousand new cases yesterday, more than India and Brazil combined.

Province says border improvements happening

Provincial government officials spoke with representatives of Sackville and Amherst on Monday to talk about concerns over the border crossing, says department of public safety communications officer Coreen Enos.

Enos says the province “has been making adjustments to improve traffic flow and will continue to do so.”

She also says a designated lane for truck drivers and local commuters recently went into effect.

On Monday, essential worker Joanna Perkin told CHMA that allowing essential workers in the commercial lane would do a lot to alleviate long and erratic commute times for those stuck crossing the border for work.

Perkin says she has been told to wait in the personal vehicle lane, despite having an essential worker travel pass.

She says what happens at the border depends on the night.

“Sometimes my essential worker pass is deemed as valid and sometimes it’s not.”

CHMA has requested further clarification from the Department of Public Safety.

Mount Allison to host town hall to share fall plans

Students and staff of Mount Allison will get an update on enrolment and fall plans for the university this Friday.

Mount Allison Board of Regents Chair George Cooper sent out an email invitation to staff and students for an online and in-person town hall session.

Cooper says University president Jean Paul Boudreau will talk about the enrolment outlook, major initiatives planned for fall, recent appointments, and joint efforts by the Town of Sackville and the University to provide a safe and supportive environment for students.

The president and Board members will also be on hand to take questions from community members.

The meeting will be hosted online, but also on campus at the Windsor Great Room, where limited seating will be available in order to accommodate COVID spacing restrictions.

The town hall this Friday starts at 10:30am. A second town hall is scheduled for August 6th at 2pm.

So far this year Mount Allison has announced a 4.5% tuition hike, and staggered move-in dates for students to allow for self-isolation time.

The university is requiring students from outside Atlantic Canada who will be staying in residence to move in August 14th or 15th, to accommodate 14 days of self isolation before the arrival of other students.
