Today’s poetry and music selection for the CHMA Daily News:

Poem: ‘The Garden by Moonlight’ by Amy Lowell

Todays poem, ‘The Garden by Moonlight’, is written by the modernist poet Amy Lowell. She is quoted in saying “I was born business woman” and in her career she accomplished some amazing feats for the time in which she lived, creating a life for herself in a misogynistic career. An avid writer and academic, she bent the social norms of gender and sexuality expressed in her relationship with actress Ada Russell. Amy Lowell and Ezra Pound are often inked by their style and content, but due to her growing popularity and her astounding work, Pound was known to be jealous or even spiteful of Lowell. In her time, Lowell attempted to cement the criteria for imagist writers, as was the styles of the time. The most prominent, in my opinion, being to use the language of common speech, to allow absolute freedom in the choice of subject, to produce poetry that is hard and clear, never blurred nor indefinite, and that these writers should believe that concentration is of the very essence of poetry. It is truly energizing to learn about these photo-feminist writers who, despite the time, were taking pride in their work and in their personal life. Many of Lowells poems are written as love poems to her interests, but read them as you will because there are other interpretations behind the rich imagism and bright sparks of romance. From what little I know about Lowell’s work, I think ‘The Garden by Moonlight’ is a good oeuvre into her poems.
