Legal advice convinces Tantramar council to turn down late application for $180k tax rebate

On today’s show, for a second time, Tantramar council considered a request for an exception in an application to its economic development incentive program. Mike Wilson’s Right Coast Realty would have qualified for a $180,000 municipal tax rebate over five years if the developer had applied to the incentive program before it started building a pipe factory on Walker Road in 2023. But a legal opinion warning council against breaking its own rules convinced councillors to let staff’s rejection of the late application stand.

And two major construction projects in downtown Sackville will be starting soon. Mount Allison has asked to close down Lansdowne Street between Ford Lane and the Sackville Curling Club in order to allow space for the paving of the Lansdowne field. And John Lafford and Mike Wilson have asked for sidewalk and street closures around their proposed 7 story apartment building project, starting in May.

Plus in briefs:

  • Strait Shores council cancelled their March meeting due to delays moving into their new municipal office just down the street.
  • Federal elections candidates have until April 7 to get their nominations in to Elections Canada.
