At their meeting Monday night, Sackville town council awarded a contract for trail development work on the Lund property, which was donated to the town of Sackville after the death of Daniel Lund in 2013.
Beech Hill Landscaping was awarded the contract for about $16,500.
Town engineer Dwayne Acton explained that the project had been delayed due to concerns over whether a Watercourse and Wetland Alteration Permit, or a WAWA permit, was required for the project.
“That’s the reason it’s coming so late,” said Acton Monday. “We had some delays with the Department of Environment and Local Government, all having to do with whether a WAWA permit was provided or needed. After going back and forth substantially with the Department of Environment, it was determined that a WAWA permit was not required.”
The trail does not actually go over wetland, explained Acton, but through a forested area between the end of Squire Street and the Daniel Lund monument.
The town received two quotes from local contractors on the project, and the lowest price was still about $2,000 over the planned budget.
Acton said he was assured by the Treasurer that the town can cover the overage with another under budget project. In addition, he said Ron Kelly Spurles has applied for a grant to cover half the cost of the project.
“We definitely have additional money under capital budgets to pay for the additional $2000,” said Acton, “assuming we don’t get the the grant that Ron Kelly Spurles has applied for. And again, we’ve got good vibes there but don’t have an official word back from them that we’re going to get that 50% funding.”
