An increase in the price of gas in the U-S northeast is being linked to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian energy imports.

The American Automobile Association’s gas price trackers showed an average increase of two cents per gallon in a single day in the state of Maine.

Canada’s consulate general in Boston says eight out of every 10 cars on the road in New England use Canadian fuel, with one of the biggest suppliers of gasoline being the Irving Oil refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick.

GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis says the northeast states won’t immediately find an alternative to Irving Oil’s refinery, which ships 80 per cent of its refined products south of the border.

(NB-Coroners-Inquest)

A coroner’s inquest in New Brunswick has made recommendations to improve safety on construction sites in the province.

The five-member jury made six recommendations in all to WorkSafeN-B, including that resources and consulting services be offered to new and existing employers before accidents happen.

It also recommended there be an adequate number of inspectors dedicated to the construction sector, with a minimum number of random or unannounced site inspections happening each month.

The inquest came after the death of Preston Allen, who died after a fall at a Fredericton construction site in December 2021.

The federal and New Brunswick governments have teamed up on an affordable housing investment in the province.

A combined 18.3-million-dollars will be invested in two projects, including the rural workforce housing pilot.

Funding will go toward the creation of 100 affordable housing units across New Brunswick.

Meantime, Abbey St. Andrew in Saint John will receive funding through the New Brunswick Housing Corporation’s rental residential rehabilitation assistance program. (The Canadian Press)

(NS-Taser-Deaths)

Criminologists are saying the deaths of two men within a week of each other in Halifax are a reminder that police are rarely the appropriate people to respond to mental health crises.

The men died in February after being Tasered by police, who say both were in mental health distress at the time.

In both cases, police say the men were Tasered after becoming aggressive with officers.

University of Alberta criminology and sociology expert Temitope Oriola says the deaths should make Halifax city officials reconsider having police respond to such calls, noting officers are not adequately trained to de-escalate mental health crisis situations.

(NL-Byrne-Liberal-Leadership)

Newfoundland and Labrador Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne has ruled out a run for the provincial Liberal leadership.

He says while he doesn’t think he’s ever been more ready or more prepared to take on the role of premier, his current role as fisheries minister and the tough times the industry is facing due to U-S tariffs are why he won’t run.

There were rumours the Corner Brook M-H-A was thinking about running in the race, but he hadn’t commented on the matter until today.

So far,  John Abbott is the only person to officially announce their leadership bid after Premier Andrew Furey announced his resignation late last month.
