Mayor John Higham and Councillor Joyce O’Neil resign

Mayor John Higham and Councillor Joyce O’Neill, Sackville Town Council

Sackville Town Council accepted the resignations of its Mayor and a town councillor last night.

Mayor John Higham resigned as of October 1st, and Councillor Joyce O’Neil resigned as of September 30th.

Town clerk Donna Beal said that the province would be informed of the resignations today.

“They will respond to us acknowledging our two vacancies,” said Beal, “then it’s out of our hands as far as the byelection. They either call one or they don’t.”

CAO Jamie Burke said that while Deputy Mayor Ron Aiken would be filling in as Mayor, that still leaves two vacancies on council.

Municipal elections were originally slated to happen on May 11th, but were cancelled by the provincial government early on in the pandemic.

At the time, the government stated that elections would likely be postponed one year, to May 2021, as a fall election could interfere with the ability of local governments to prepare and pass budgets.

It’s not clear what impact the two vacancies will have on that decision.
