Mesheau disappointed and surprised by extended border restrictions and blockade

Sackville mayor Shawn Mesheau spoke with Tantramar Report on Wednesday, June 23, 2021:

Mesheau says he was surprised by the decision out of Nova Scotia on Tuesday to exclude New Brunswick from the lifting of travel restrictions.

“It’s disappointing that things have unfolded as they have,” says Mesheau. “I thought the province of New Brunswick had a good plan. They had some targets, we were hitting our targets.”

However, “different provinces have different perspectives,” he says. “And obviously, Nova Scotia felt that there was concerns with the fact that New Brunswick was opening up to Canada sooner than later.”

Mesheau says he hopes Rankin’s team will considering lifting restrictions for New Brunswick travel sooner rather than later, but he expects that to happen by June 30. He hopes border residents can wait out the final stretch. “We’ve held on,” says Mesheau. “We’re almost there.”

Mesheau says cross border commuters in the region have become accustomed to changing rules, though the blockade posed an extra challenge. “These folks have been dealing with this now for 14-15 months,” says Mesheau, “and it’s always changing. I think for the most part, they’ve come to realize that it’s going to continue to change.”
