Midwives – A Fight for Pay Equity

Podcast. Abi Hamilton. Pay equity is a fundamental human right guaranteed by the Human Rights Code and the Pay Equity Act. As an almost exclusively female profession providing women- and trans-centred health care, Ontario midwives have been fighting for pay equity for over 20 years. In 2013, the AOM Association for Ontario Midwives filed an application with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), claiming the province had continually and systematically set a discriminatory compensation structure for midwives. This is a full casted Audio Dramatization of the story of the Midwife’s fight for pay equity justice. This was all possible through the Women and Gender Studies Department at Mount Allison University and the WGST3201 Gender and Work class in partnership with the New Brunswick Pay Equity Coalition. The episode is sponsored by Mount Allisons Office for Experiential Learning and Career Development as well as Future New Brunswick. And the biggest thank you to my teacher who made this all possible, Dr. Rachelle Pascoe-Deslauriers.
