(NB-Rent-Cap)

The New Brunswick government will be introducing a rent cap in February.

The cap will forbid landlords from increasing rents by more than three per cent annually, with the program set to be evaluated each year.

Under current legislation, landlords must give tenants six months’ written notice of a rent increase and they can only give notice of a rent increase once every 12 months.

Any tenant served a rent increase notice higher than three per cent is being urged to contact the Tenant and Landlord Relations Office to request a formal review.  (The Canadian Press)

The proposed changes would see the cost of the carbon adjuster removed from the price of gasoline and diesel.

The province estimates the move would save New Brunswickers about four cents per litre at the pumps.

The change would take effect when the bill receives royal assent in mid-December.  (The Canadian Press)
