CHMA drops in to the Owens Art Gallery to speak with Gwen Manthey, a paintings conservator with the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. Manthey is in Sackville this week along with a group of paintings that will be featured in a new exhibition: Hidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901).
Edward Mitchell Bannister was a Black artist born in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, who spent most of his adult life in Providence, Rhode Island, where he was also a prominent abolitionist and philanthropist. Hidden Blackness is the first major exhibition of Edward Mitchell Bannister’s work ever presented in Canada, 124 years after the artist’s death.
