Podcasting with CHMA has been a great resource for faculty members and students to compliment their classes and academic requirements. This is certainly a fantastic learning platform to create innovative, educational and alternative community-based programming.
Podcasting in our studios is very easy and convenient! We’re also available to help with any aspect of your project. We have three main ways that students have worked with us for their courses: A Radio Show, Podcasting and Live-Podcasting.
A once-a-week Radio Show can be a great way to discuss class subject matter. The training is simple and the technical side is very straight-forward. We also make your broadcast available right away in our On Demand section and can be setup to podcast right away. Complete a form here.
A Live-Podcast is the same as a radio show. We have a system in place that can record your show and post it directly to chmafm.com and Spotify. You just have to give us an image and description, and show up on time. Please use the same form for radio.
The major benefit of radio and live-podcasting is that it’s very causal, less techincal and reduces the amount of time editing and producing. But they have the limitations of being very time specific and not everyone is comfortable broadcasting live-to-air. Podcasting is great for this. We currently have 3 studios to accommodate recording for 1, 2, and 3 people and our training can be complete in as little as 15 minutes.
NPR has put together an incredible introduction and guide to podcasting here. We strongly suggest reading through it.
Have a look at our four-step checklist to get your podcast up and running:
1. Book a Training Session
We strongly suggest coming by for a training session before you book a studio to record. Our training in concise and about 15-20 minutes. We mostly focus on the technically side (Mic technique, editing, mixing and exporting), but can also be available to go over content and anything else you might need.
Visit https://www.chmafm.com/welcome/getinvolved/ and pick a time on our calendar. If you would like to meet at another preferred time, please don’t hesitate to send us a note at station@chmafm.com, and we can work it out together.
2. Book a Studio
Once the training has been completed, you can then book any of the studios available: https://www.chmafm.com/welcome/studios/.
These booking calendars only allow you to book the room for a maximum of 2 hours. If you would like to record your podcast for longer, you can make more than one bookings. For example, if you would like to record for 3 hours, you can make two bookings: 2 hour and 1 hour time slot.
3. Recording Your Podcast
We have everything you need to do an amazing podcast. We advise you to use your own laptop, if you have one. This makes it easier for you to take it come and work on it at your leisure. You’re also welcome to record to our computers and transfer using wetransfer.com or a USB key. It’s very important to remember to take your media with you. These are public computers and ee can’t be responsible for anything left on them.
We’ve created a number of How-to Guides to help you out record in our various studios. Please reach out to station@chmafm.com for training to get up to speed.
4. Upload it to our podcast distribution platform
We’ve very happy to be able to offer a great free and easy service to upload your podcast to multiple platforms, and to release the episodes as you prefer. Once you’re ready to pubish your first episode, we’ll create an account for you with publishing instructions. It’s very easy and you have complete control of your episodes. Once you publish your first episodes it appears on chmafm.com right away and then Spotify soon after. Once the first episode is out to the world, then you just have to upload subsequent episodes and they automatically populate to all the platforms.
