New Brunswick RCMP spokesperson Constable Hans Ouellette has confirmed that the force has received and are investigating more than one complaint of sexual harassment in Sackville.

“The Sackville RCMP is investigating recent complaints of sexual harassment related to a local university,” said Ouellette in a phone interview Friday. “The details of those complaints are part of an ongoing investigation, and I’m not at liberty to comment on that at this time.”

Mount Allison students were warned about incidents of street harassment in an email sent out on October 9, 2020, from Kim Meade, Mount Allison’s vice president for international and student affairs.

In the letter, Meade says police are “investigating a report of students being harassed by a group of young men.”

Ouellette explained that while sexual harassment is not in the criminal code, uttering threats is a criminal offence. There is also an offence in the criminal code called “criminal harassment.”

In her letter, Meade says that students in need of support can contact the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Education Service, known as SHARE.

SHARE provides support for all types of sexual violence, including harassment.

The South East Sexual Assault Crisis Centre also has a 24/7 crisis phone line.

Meade asks that anyone with information about the incidents call the RCMP complaint line at 1-888-506-7267.
