Sackville locals take home gold at provincial music festival

The New Brunswick Federation of Music Festivals held their 49th Provincial Music Festival last week, and there were some local winners.

Amelia Hurst’s award-winning performance of Malcolm Arnold’s Sonatina for Clarinet.

Amelia Hurst took first place in Intermediate Woodwinds, and her colleague Bliss Behar took third in the same category.

Tomas Sigtryggsson took first in the Junior Canadian Composer category, alongside fellow local, Elizabeth Jones, who took second.

Hurst, Behar, Sigtryggsson and Jones all represented the Sackville Music Festival at the event, which hosts approximately 100 young musicians from around the province.

In addition to the Sackville winners, there were also a number of Mount Allison students who took home prizes representing other local festivals around the province:

Mélanie Dupuis, Senior Voice (representing Fredericton Music Festival) – 3rd place
Adam Peck, Senior Piano (representing NB Competitive Festival of Music, Saint John) – 3rd place
Amelia Hurst, Intermediate Woodwinds (representing Sackville Music Festival) – 1st place
Sarah MacLoon, Senior Musical Theatre (representing Fredericton Music Festival) – 2nd place; also Senior Voice 
Brandon Mulherin, Senior Musical Theatre (representing Victoria County Music Festival) – 3rd place
Zeting (Jerry) Yin, Senior Composition (representing NB Competitive Festival of Music, Saint John) – 1st place; also Senior Piano
