Last Sunday, the Bill Johnstone Memorial Park Field House was filled for the Sackville Farmers Market Annual General Meeting.
According to the Market Administration, it was a record turn-out which included both new and out-going board members as well as vendor and community members.
New members of the 2025-2026 Board of Directors are: Jason Pennoyer of East Meats West Butchers, Logan Lush of Lush Acres Heritage, and community members Harold Jarche and Carla VanBesalaere with Gregory Burton of Willow Farm, Matthew Hol of Holstead Farmand Phillip Samek of The Dainty Pickle Bakery returning to the board.
Market Manager, Vanessa Blackier’s creative report struck an optimistic tone. It included management’s focus on Safety. For example, the purchasing of pylons for dedicated vendor parking and a yellow safety coat for the manager so that she can be found quickly; Administrative Improvements including data collection to chart progress; and Special Events, with Night Markets being a new addition this past summer. All of which have proven to be positive additions to market operations.
Outgoing treasurer, Judith Cane’s financial report showed growth in revenue from 2023 to 2024, which were attributed to high vendor turnout and special event markets, as well as an increase in expenses (due to some necessary repairs and student employee wages).
A number of members voiced concerns that the Market Manager’s salary be reviewed with an eye to fairness and that if activities or expectations are added to her responsibilities, that they be acknowledged with proper additional remuneration. This was acknowledged to be a matter for the new board to consider.
Continuing to work towards a permanent location for the market remains a primary goal for the year ahead.
Volunteers have been, and are, an essential part of the success of the organization. In preparation for a successful outdoor season, the Market is actively encouraging community members to come forward to volunteer and contribute to this important part of the fabric of Sackville life.
The Sackville Market will return to Bill Johnstone Memorial Park on May 3rd and will remain outside until October 25th. For more information, including how to become vendor, community member or to volunteer with the market visit their website at: sackvillefarmersmarket.ca.
