Sackville town council to discuss rink fees, skateboard rules, in meeting Tuesday

The town of Sackville meets Tuesday night for its monthly discussion meeting. Council and staff will meet at 6pm for a closed meeting, and start the public agenda at 6:30pm.

The agenda includes two topics first brought up before the last election: skateboards on town streets and rink subsidies. This is the first time that new councillors Sabine Dietz, Matt Estabrooks, and Ken Hicks will get a chance to weigh in on these topics.

In April, the previous council passed a motion supporting the development of revisions to the street traffic bylaw that would, “permit skateboard use on municipal streets, while addressing safety, liability, and enforcement concerns.” Council also voted to ask staff to work with the town solicitor to come up with those revisions. All but Councillor Bruce Phinney approved of the move.

Another item on Tuesday’s agenda, “rink ice subsidy”, appears to be related to requested subsidies for rink fees at the Tantramar Veteran’s Memorial Civic Centre discussed during budget deliberations last fall. The Sackville Minor Hockey association and the Sackville Skating Club both requested a subsidy towards the fees they pay to use the rink, which amount to ten of thousands of dollars each year.

In their approved 2021 budget council included a “council initiatives” line of $65,000, which at the time was described as being available for rink subsidies and a study into the placement and design of a new skatepark in Sackville.

Here’s a look at the full agenda for tonight’s meeting:
