Environment Canada is warning of a period of very warm and humid weather Monday and Tuesday.

The agency says, “a combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity will occur today and Tuesday inland, away from most coastal areas. The warmest conditions are expected to occur today, where Humidex values will reach up to 43 this afternoon and 39 to 41 Tuesday. Temperatures will turn cooler over all areas on Tuesday night.”

The forecast for Sackville predicts a high of 33 degrees Monday and 32 degrees Tuesday, not including Humidex.

In response to the warning, the Anglophone East School district announced at 8:40am on Monday that all schools would dismiss early. The alert was updated to include early dismissal on Tuesday, June 8. The notice reads:

All Schools in ASD-E will have an early dismissal on Tuesday, June 8th. Beginning at the elementary school for students in K-2 at 11am, students in grades 3-8 at 11:45am, High School at 12:15pm.

The province has put most of New Brunswick under high heat alert level 2, which means “everyone is at increased risk of heat stress and heat stroke under the conditions.” The province recommends people take the following precautions:

  • Check regularly on your neighbours and relatives to make sure they are not in danger
  • Organizers of sport and recreational activities should build in regular water breaks and rest or consider rescheduling activities.
  • Drink plenty of cool fluids, especially water, before feeling thirsty.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing.
  • Keep the sun out with curtains or blinds.
  • Plan outdoor activities around cooler parts of the day while respecting physical distancing.
  • Avoid exposure to the sun.
  • Never leave someone or a pet in your care inside a parked car.
