Tantramar Report: Mt A’s new vaccination rule, nurses’ union pres on rejected deal, and Levee on the Lake this weekend

On Friday’s Tantramar Report:

Mount Allison University announced Thursday that vaccinations or regular testing would be mandatory for students, staff and faculty on campus.  Anne Comfort is Mt A’s Vice President of International and Student Affairs, and she joins us to talk about why the university made the move to mandatory.

On August 12, 2021, about 6000 nurses in two bargaining units of the New Brunswick Nurses Union “overwhelmingly rejected” a tentative agreement recently reached between the government and their negotiating team.  We speak with union president Paula Doucet and ask what the issues are that caused nurses to turn down the deal.  And we ask what it will mean for the nursing shortage in New Brunswick.

People driving past Silver Lake this Saturday will be taking some detours to make way for the Sackville Triathlon and The Levee on the Lake. The Triathlon starts at 8am Saturday morning with a 750 metre swim in Silver Lake. Athletes then take on a 20 kilometre bike ride on route 940, and a 5 kilometre run on the Great Trail. As the triathlon winds down, the Levee on the Lake will be winding up. The music festival is presenting a free main stage concert on Saturday afternoon featuring Inn Echo, Dave Gunning, Monroe, Melanie Morgan, and the East Pointers.  The Levee also features free music and cultural workshops today and this weekend, as well as ticketed concerts.  You can find more information on the festival website, leveeonthelake.com

The roads closed for the Saturday events will be Main Street from Morice Drive up to Church, and Church from Main to Folkins. And local traffic only will be allowed between Donald Harper Drive and Station Road, which are part of the detour route for the closure.

The Southeast District RCMP are still looking for the driver of a dark coloured Chevy Impala who struck a pedestrian while leaving the parking lot at the Independent grocery store on Main Street on August 7.  The pedestrian was walking on the sidewalk at the time and was not injured.  RCMP reported two other motor vehicle collisions so far in August. On August 3, a single vehicle lost control and went off the road near Folkins Drive. And a two-car collision in Port Elgin on August 14 is still being investigated by police.

A 25-year-old man is facing numerous charges including attempted murder following a stabbing incident during the early morning hours of Thursday, August 19 on Rupert Street in Amherst.  One man was injured in the attack, and was treated in hospital and released. Samuel James Moase will remain in custody until August 23, when he is scheduled to appear in provincial court.

The COVID-19 active case count in New Brunswick has now hit 132, and Public Health is still investigating the source of 103 COVID-19 infections. In Zone 1, 16 new cases were announced Thursday, putting the active case count in this health zone at 94. The provincial vaccination rate hit 72% of eligible people on Thursday, still short of the original green goal of 75%.

Today at 11am, Education Minister Dominic Cardy and deputy chief medical officer of health Dr. Cristin Muecke are scheduled to give a press conference outlining plans for the school year, which starts in a matter of weeks. Tune in to Tantramar Report on Monday for highlights.
