The Town of Sackville is honouring a celebrated pianist for her contributions to the local arts and culture scene.

On Wednesday, Janet Hammock is being inducted into the Sackville Arts Wall, overlooking the Waterfowl Park on Main Street. A jury selects new inductees every two years.

Hammock, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University, has been named Arts Builder, which recognizes citizens or groups that have “made a significant contribution to the cultural and artistic development of our community.”

On Friday, CHMA interviewed Hammock at her sunlit studio, which is brimming with books and scores of music. You can hear highlights from the interview here:

This report includes clips from an archived recording of Hammock performing “Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano” by the American composer John Cage.

It also includes Hammock playing “Prière,” a song or fragment written by the French composer Erik Satie, recorded in Hammock’s studio on Friday.

She dedicated that song to Sackville resident Vallie Stearns-Anderson, who died last week.

The induction event is open to the public. It begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Vogue Cinema (doors at 5:30), followed by the unveiling of plaques at the Arts Wall site on Main Street. Delanor Wheaton will also be inducted into the Arts Wall to honour his achievements in the performing arts in the field of music.
