Welcome to the morning roundup, featuring local news and information from the airwaves of CHMA 106.9FM published every Tuesday and Thursday. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday, we’ll continue to bring you Tantramar Report, featuring local voices and local stories.

In Tuesday’s morning roundup:

With special mail-in ballots still uncounted and some ridings still undecided, the Liberals will form another minority government in Canada. In Beauséjour, incumbent Dominic LeBlanc handily won by a large margin with nearly 55% of the vote. The Conservatives’ Shelly Mitchell was in second place with 19.5% of the votes, and NDP candidate Evelyne Godfrey took 11.3%. The Green vote in Beauséjour plummeted, in line with the rest of the province, to just 5.7%. The People’s Party garnered more support with 7.8% of votes cast. The Free Party took 0.8% of the votes.

An indoor mask mandate returns to New Brunswick at midnight tonight, along with new rules requiring double vaccination status for non-essential services. Premier Blaine Higgs made the announcement in a news conference yesterday.

Public Health reported a new record high in daily case counts, with 75 cases on Sunday. A total of 199 new cases were reported spanning three days, with 46 of those cases in Zone 1.

And the Sackville region has its share of new cases:

Mount Allison University emailed staff and students Monday afternoon to let them know that an employee of the university has tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-isolating at home. The university says Public Health has conducted contact tracing, and determined there were no close contacts among co-workers, and the risk to the community is considered low. For more click here.

There are nine new cases at the Drew Nursing Home, bringing the total case count up to 19 at the home. Fourteen residents and five staff people at the Drew have contracted COVID-19. Chief Medical Officer of Health Jennifer Russell told reporters yesterday that Public Health has not declared an outbreak at the Drew, though she would not say why not.

Last night at a special meeting, Sackville town council passed a motion requiring employees to be fully vaccinated or else submit to regular testing. The new policy will be phased in by October 14, says CAO Jamie Burke, and applies to all employees, volunteers and contractors for the town.

Mount Allison’s cross country teams had great success racing this past weekend in PEI. The women’s team swept the top three places in their race, with Mount Allison’s Teagan Stewart taking first place. In the men’s race, Mount Allison runners took second, third, fifth and sixth place.

And speaking of running… The race crew of The Main Street Mile is looking for volunteers to help out at the finish line this Saturday during the Fall Fair. People are needed to hand out snacks and drinks, give kids medals, write down names and times, and help The Rotary Club of Sackville give out free t-shirts. Volunteers need to be at the Train Station on Saturday at 12:30pm. Anyone interested can contact Andrew Black or The Main Street Mile on Facebook.
