The new orange: what’s open and closed this time around

New Brunswick announced on Thursday, November 19, 2020 that Zone 1, the southeast region which includes Sackville and Tantramar, would be returning to orange phase restrictions. But the orange phase looks different this time around.

CHMA is compiling information regarding what’s open and closed as a result of orange level restrictions. If you have further information, please contact us at news@chmafm.com. This post will be updated regularly.

Most businesses and organizations will be permitted to remain open, with some changes to their protocols.

Mount Allison is closing all university buildings, including the Athletic and Fitness Centres, to anyone who is not a student, staff or faculty effective Wednesday, November 25, 2020.

UPDATE: Some programs with Sackville Recreation are going ahead without disruption. “Pickleball and Trailblazers are all continuing in accordance with the Orange Level requirements,” says town CAO Jamie Burke. Seniors’ aerobics is cancelled.

Spas and hair stylists may remain open with enhanced public health measures. It’s worth checking with individual shops to make sure they haven’t been affected. All of You, Love is in the Hair, and Salon 41 say that clients should not anticipate operational changes due to orange phase restrictions as they were already following multiple required safety plans.

The Cattail Ridge Family Market is open, but is enforcing a strict no cash rule while Zone 1 remains orange.

The Vogue Cinema is closed for this orange phase, says owner Jeff Coates. While cinemas are not required to close by the province, the new orange phase brings a 50 person capacity limit, and also requires continuous mask wearing. In the past, masks could be removed while eating or drinking, similar to a restaurant. “We can not open without food sales,” says Coates.

The closure of the Vogue means another temporary hiatus for the Sackville Film Society. Organizer Thaddeus Holownia announced on social media, “we have to postpone our screenings for two weeks.” (Here’s hoping that’s not being optimistic.)

Moonlight Madness is going ahead Friday and Saturday night (November 20 and 21) in downtown Sackville.

The Tantramar Civic Centre will remain open. The new rules allow for recreational and sport organizations to continue operating, though they are limited to practices within a single team.
