Wolastoqey won’t participate in Higgs’ systemic racism commission

The Wolastoqey Chiefs have declined to participate in the New Brunswick government’s commission into systemic racism in the province.

The commission was announced in March, after the Higgs government refused the call by the chiefs for an independent enquiry into systemic racism in the justice system. That call was precipitated by the deaths of Chantal Moore and Rodney Levi, both killed by police officers on duty.

In September, the province hired Manju Varma to serve as commissioner of systemic racism, with a budget of $500,000, and a goal of reporting back by September 2022.
