Thursday roundup: TRHS and PERS closed again; Fall Fair cancelled; global climate strike in Sackville Friday

On Thursday’s morning roundup:

Tantramar Regional High School has another case of COVID-19, and is closed again today. The high school was closed Monday due to a COVID case, but reopened Tuesday and Wednesday. A letter from principal Susan Lafford Wednesday night says parents whose children may have been affected will receive an email from Public Health, and should check their email. The Anglophone East school district announced today’s closure later Wednesday evening, at 9:50pm.

Port Elgin Regional School announced Wednesday evening that students would be moving to online learning Thursday and Friday this week. PERS was originally closed Monday and Tuesday due to a COVID case, but reopened on Wednesday.

A daycare in Sackville was closed Wednesday due to a COVID-19 case. Wiggles and Giggles Early Learning Centre has told parents that they will hear from Public Health regarding any exposures, and the centre is closed until further instruction from Public Health.

The Drew Nursing Home reported one more resident with COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total case count at the home to 23. One resident has been moved to hospital with the disease. There are 17 residents with COVID-19, and six staff people. Mike Keating, interim director of the New Brunswick Nursing Home Association, says a committee has been struck with government, the unions and the nursing home association to address the issue of staff shortages at homes when outbreaks occur.

The town of Sackville has cancelled this year’s Fall Fair due to what it calls “a recent sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Sackville and its surrounding communities.” Recreation director Matt Pryde said the decision came after a “sombre conversation” with town management, and that despite the disappointment, he feels cancelling the event is the right thing to do. More on this story here.

Numbers released Wednesday afternoon show 15 new cases in Zone 1, out of 76 new cases province-wide. There are now 134 active cases of COVID-19 in Zone 1, and a record 557 province-wide. The numbers also show one more death from COVID-19, although the province issued no press release with details. CHMA can say that the death did not occur in Zone 1.

Student climate justice group Divest Mt A are hosting a local installment of the Fridays for Future global strike this Friday. The group is inviting students and community members to meet in the academic quad outside the RP Bell library at 10:30am on Friday for speeches and chants, followed by a march to the Centennial Building on the Mount A campus, home to the university’s administrative offices.

The RCMP are investigating the theft of a Kubota tractor from Charles Street near the Sackville Industrial Park. A number of officers were in the area on Tuesday morning making enquiries. Corporal Brian Villers said he couldn’t share more details as the investigation was active.

The Sackville Music Barn has new owners. Siblings Jonathan Read and Stacey Read Whittleton have purchased the barn from previous owners Brian and Marlene Doncaster, who have run the event and concert venue since 2007. The pair says they are “looking forward to working with community, organizations and other families to mark major milestones and celebrations under the legendary steel roof on Station Road in Sackville.”

And last but not least, CHMA programmer Jack Keddy is celebrating a remarkable 35 years on CHMA this Thursday night at 7pm. You may know Jack as DJ Banzai, bringing classic rock to the Sackville airwaves every Thursday evening for all these years. Congratulations, Jack, on your dedication to community radio, and, of course, to rock and roll.
