Things will sound a little different today on Sackville’s local radio station. In honour of National Truth and Reconciliation Day, CHMA-FM will be carrying A DAY TO LISTEN 2022, from 6am to 6pm, on 106.9FM and chmafm.com.
Hosted by JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriters William Prince and Celeigh Cardinal, the 12-hour broadcast will feature stories from Indigenous leaders, residential school Survivors, Elders, musicians, and teachers centred around the theme of “Messages of Hope”. The day of special programming is made possible by the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF), and will air on hundreds of radio stations across Canada.
The first A DAY TO LISTEN took place on June 2021, following the public announcement that the remains of 215 children were buried at the site of the former Kamloops Residential School. Since then, the bodies of thousands more children have been found, and the country has created a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, to provide a time for mourning, understanding, learning and healing.
This year’s theme, “Messages of Hope”, will centre on four areas: Cultural Reclamation, Language Resurgence, Art Practice, Land-Based Learning Narratives.
