The Town of Sackville is hosting Local Week from July 26th to August 1st.
The event is designed to provide a support system for Sackville restaurants and farms facing difficulties with COVID-19 and to promote eating locally. Local restaurants will design a dish that is made from local ingredients within the Sackville area.
Breanna MacLeod, a third-year Environmental Studies student at Mount Allison and a climate change awareness intern with the Town of Sackville, is one of the faces behind the scenes. She designed the event with a focus on climate change and what Sackville residents can do to support the environment.
Where Breanna grew up was a big inspiration as to why she chose Local Week over other initiatives the town could host:
She was also interested in Local Week due to the combination of the difficulties that businesses have faced with the current pandemic and the need for environmental change.
Local Week coordinators and participants are also being cautious with social distancing protocol, just in their own ways. Each restaurant has control over whether they have take-out, dine-in, or delivery services — check with each participating restaurant to learn their plan.
In addition to having the restaurants make local dishes, there will also be local burger boxes available for purchase during the week.
There will also be a tour day at Open Sky Co-op, a farm in Sackville, on Friday the 31st, where people will get to visit a local farm and see how it operates.
More information about Local Week, participating businesses, and registration can be found on the Town of Sackville’s Facebook page as well as the flyers and posters around Sackville.
